Young Nigerian Singer Ifunanya Nwangene Dies After Snake Bite in Abuja, Nation Mourns
There has been a wave of grief across Nigeria following the tragic death of Ifunanya Nwangene, a 26-year-old aspiring singer, who died after being bitten by a snake in her apartment in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
Ifunanya gained public recognition in 2021 after appearing on The Voice Nigeria, the local edition of the global singing competition. She stood out for her unique vocal range and musical versatility, skillfully blending jazz, opera, classical music, and soul. Beyond music, she was also a trained architect, reflecting her wide range of talents.
Snake Found in Her Apartment
According to reports, a snake was discovered inside her home after the incident. Videos circulating online show a snake handler removing a reptile from the apartment while people nearby expressed fear, identifying it as a cobra. Friends later said that two snakes were reportedly found in the residence.
A close friend and music director of the Amemuso Choir, where Ifunanya sang, described her as a “rising star” who had been planning her first solo concert later this year.
Another friend shared that she had been asleep when the bite occurred and that she woke up in distress.
Medical Emergency and Search for Antivenom
She was first taken to a nearby clinic, but it reportedly did not have the necessary antivenom. She was then transferred to a hospital for further treatment. Friends said the hospital had one type of antivenom but lacked another required for full treatment.
Those present said she struggled to breathe while medical staff tried to stabilise her. Efforts were made to locate the missing antivenom, but sadly, she did not survive.
The hospital has been contacted for comment.
Friends and Fans Pay Tribute
Choir members and friends gathered at the hospital, holding on to hope. Many described her as humble, intelligent, and exceptionally talented. Social media has since been flooded with tributes, with many Nigerians expressing shock that such a tragedy could happen in a high-end area of Abuja.
Renewed Concerns Over Healthcare and Snakebite Treatment
Her passing has also sparked conversations about healthcare access, emergency response, and antivenom availability in Nigeria.
The World Health Organization (WHO) describes snakebite envenoming as a neglected public health issue in many tropical countries. Hundreds of thousands of cases are recorded annually in Africa, with many victims struggling to access proper treatment. Experts say shortages of antivenom, high costs, and storage challenges contribute to preventable deaths.
Health authorities in Nigeria have acknowledged ongoing challenges within the health system and are working toward improving clinical governance and patient safety.
